My research interests have two main foci: systematic theology and Christianity and culture. In November 2006, I published a book on H. R. Niebuhr's Christ and Culture entitled: Rethinking Christ and Culture: A Post-Christendom Perspective. My critique of Niebuhr is that his call to the transformation of culture was made in a Christendom context and that in our contemporary post-Christendom context it constitutes a recipe for accommodation of the church to the world. I present a new typology of how Christ and culture relate, which is relevant to our situation.
In 2001, I published a book on the thought of John Howard Yoder entitled: The Politics of the Cross: The Theology and Social Ethics of John Howard Yoder. This book was the first scholarly, full-length, introduction to Yoder's thought. It assesses his ecumenical importance, rather than treating him as a figure of interest to the Mennonite world only. I am convinced that Yoder is one of the most important Christian thinkers of the Twentieth century and this book attempts to show why.
