POSITION PURPOSE

The faculty advisor is a consultant specialized in the field of practicum supervision. The faculty advisor provides their expertise to a small group of teacher candidates with a focus on mentorship and support to prepare for, engage in, and reflect upon practicum placements in schools.

The services provided by the faculty advisor will include, but not be limited to, providing supervision and guidance to teacher candidates for EDPR 5312 Practicum 1, EDPR 5322 Practicum 2, and EDPR 5332 Practicum 3. Additionally, the faculty advisor is responsible for conducting assessment and evaluation, leading learning sessions, and other duties related to the practicum experience, as well as attendance at some sessions of EDPR 5343 Professional Seminar, the course which is closely connected to the practicum.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Practicum Preparation

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with teacher candidates
  • Make initial contact with confirmed practicum schools including with associate teachers and school administration
  • Become familiar with the Practicum Handbook
  • Develop and deliver practicum preparation learning sessions to teacher candidates during designated Professional Seminar course sessions
  • Maintain timely and regular communication with teacher candidates 
  • Provide support as needed to teacher candidates who have questions or concerns leading up to the practicum

Practicum Supervision

  • Coordinate and communicate details regarding practicum visits with teacher candidates and associate teachers 
  • Observe teacher candidates teaching and provide descriptive feedback as per Practicum Handbook criteria
  • Communicate practicum and university expectations to associate teachers 
  • Build and maintain communication with practicum school contacts, including associate teachers and administrators 
  • Assess teacher candidate progress through the completion of formative and summative evaluations
  • Maintain regular communication with the Practicum Coordinator and Practicum Team Lead regarding teacher candidates’ progress

Program Support

  • Attend and actively participate in team meetings and ongoing professional dialogues sessions, as able
  • Participate in assessment of new applicants to the program, including reading application files and conducting interviews
  • Participate in Capstone Conversations 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience

  • A designation in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Substantial experience as an educator in a public school board
  • Experience as a school or system leader
  • Experience working with pre-service teacher candidates 

Skills, Abilities, and Attributes

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario’s current and historical educational landscape
  • Evidence of and adherence to the professional and ethical standards of practice for the profession as outlined by the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • familiarity with technology for purposes of collaboration and communication
  • A firm commitment to Tyndale’s mission, values, Statement of Faith and Community Standards Statement
  • Ability to actively and hopefully engage with teacher candidates in all areas of wellbeing and professionalism (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual)
  • Ability and willingness to travel to partner school boards around the Greater Toronto Area (Toronto, Durham, York, Peel, Halton) and to be on campus when necessary
  • Sitting and focusing for periods of time during the observation of candidate teaching and while contributing to team meetings
  • High levels of organization and attention to detail including responsivity to communication, completion of tasks, and submission of documentation
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and creativity when engaging with stakeholder groups in support of practicum placement expectations

Salary:

  • Rate: $750 per teacher candidate per practicum placement.
